Dear NIRI Seattle Members, Colleagues, and Friends:
Welcome! Whether you are new to investor relations or an industry veteran, and whether you are a NIRI National dues-paying member or not, we invite you to participate in our organization. Like many of the NIRI chapters throughout the country, we watched our numbers swell during the late 1990s and into the 2000s, as our industry expanded and our range of responsibilities increased. Much has changed. From the structure of Wall Street and how stocks are traded, to the ongoing gusher of regulation, the business of IR is very different from what it was ten or even five years ago. The demand for time and resources has increased exponentially over that period. We at NIRI Seattle are working hard to keep up and offer our members and sponsors the broadest range of opportunities to network, learn, and engage. We’re here to help you keep up with all of the changes.
We kicked off the fall calendar of events by bringing a speaker from the SEC. She spoke to our group about changes to the focus of the organization since Mary Jo White’s coming on board as the head of the SEC just over a year ago. We followed that event with a lunchtime panel discussion of how companies gather, use, and package Big Data. We rounded out the fall with a couple NIRI On The Rocks social gatherings and are looking forward to hosting our annual Holiday Event in late November.
As we look forward to 2015, we are busy planning our lineup of events that are meant to engage and enrich the professional lives of our members. In addition to content, we’re exploring a variety of locations, dates, and times to allow for the greatest attendance and impact as we look to tap into what works and find out how to best meet the needs of our Pacific Northwest-based constituency. Let us know how we can keep doing better. We would love to hear from you.
All the best for the remainder of 2014 and into the New Year.
2014-15 NIRI Seattle Chapter President
In October, we presented Big Data & IR, looking at how Big Data is impacting everything we do, including investor relations. But what exactly is Big Data and how is it being used? And can it actually help us do our jobs – or is it more likely to be used against our best efforts? Watch the video (http://tinyurl.com/loov8kq) to hear a panel of three Big Data experts discuss exactly these questions and the implications for their customers and for those of us in investor relations.
In September, we heard Alice Liu Jensen from the SEC in San Francisco discuss current issues concerning new regulation, enforcement, and the SEC’s role in overseeing a fair and fluid financial marketplace. More details on this past program are at in our events section at http://www.niriseattle.org/event-1743081.
Please join us on Thursday, November 20 for our Annual NIRI Seattle Holiday Party. This year’s event will be in the private room at Black Bottle in Belltown. Come have a nibble and sip on something seasonal as we begin to wind down the year with colleagues and friends. Guests are very welcome.
